Situated on the Esplanade, the Redcar lifeboat station houses Atlantic 85 and IB1 class lifeboats. One of the oldest lifeboat stations in the RNLI, Redcar is the home of the Zetland, the world’s oldest surviving lifeboat.

The Zetland lifeboat was inaugurated before the RNLI started in the UK and then took over lifesaving in Redcar. There is a museum at 60 Esplanande where the old lifeboat can still be seen.

Because the Esplanade is next to the beach tide wall, the lifeboat station is actually on the opposite side of the road. The station has its own dedicated slipway opposite leading to the beach and at high tide directly into the sea,
