The first IKEA furniture store in Germany opened on October 17, 1974 in Eching near Munich. In 1987 there were 18 houses: Berlin-Spandau, Kaltenkirchen, Stuhr, Großburgwedel, Löhne (closed on March 31, 1996), Kassel, Dorsten, Kamen, Kaarst, Cologne-Godorf, Walldorf, Hofheim am Taunus, Bous, Fürth, Stuttgart, Freiburg im Breisgau and Eching.

Since December 13, 2010, Berlin-Lichtenberg on Landsberger Allee is home to the world's second largest facility, with a gross floor area of ??approximately 43,000 m². The furniture stores in Oldenburg and Rostock are the first in the world to have a glass extension for the extensive factory area.

On March 14, 2014, a new furniture store was opened in Lübeck-Dänischburg, according to a concept that is new in Germany. This is how, in one unit with the furniture store, the LUV shopping center and a hardware store were created in the same place.

On June 30, 2014, a third furniture store was opened in Hamburg. The Altona district now houses the second IKEA department store in the city center of a major city, after Essen that opened in 1993. To avoid excessive traffic chaos, you can borrow cargo bikes here - also a novelty - to transport the goods home in an environmentally friendly way. Since there are four S-Bahn and ten bus lines in the immediate vicinity of this furniture store, it is - according to IKEA - "an ideal location".

The 50th German IKEA store opened in Kaiserslautern on August 13, 2015.

As of September 2017, there were 53 IKEA furniture stores in Germany in Berlin (three locations), Bielefeld, Braunschweig, Bremerhaven, Chemnitz, Dortmund, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Eching, Erfurt, Essen, Frankfurt am Main, Freiburg im Breisgau, Fürth, Gersthofen , Großburgwedel, Hamburg (three branches), Hanau, Hanover, Hofheim am Taunus, Kaarst, Kaiserslautern, Kamen, Kassel, Kiel, Koblenz, Cologne (two branches), Leuna, Lübeck, Ludwigsburg, Magdeburg, Mannheim, Oldenburg, Osnabrück, Regensburg , Rostock, Saarlouis, Schönefeld, Siegen, Sindelfingen, Stuhr, Taufkirchen, Ulm, Walldorf, Wetzlar, Wuppertal and Würzburg. There is also a pick-up and delivery station in Ravensburg and a pick-up station in Leipzig.

On October 12, 2017, the world's most sustainable IKEA store to date was opened in Kaarst. This is the new building of the existing location.

The 54th IKEA store in Germany opened in Karlsruhe on September 24, 2020. It should be the last "IKEA-style classic and at the gates of the city".

In Essen and Eching, the new buildings of the existing branches were planned. Due to a new corporate strategy, the planned openings in Memmingen and Nuremberg for 2019 and 2020 have been temporarily halted and new concepts have been revised. A planned new building in Bottrop has not been realised.
