The modern style Courthouse Building on Grand Cayman Island was completed in 1972. It was designed by the Jamaican firm, Rutkowski, Bradford & Partners, who also designed the Legislative Assembly Building and the Glass House. The upper level of the building houses the Grand Court, Magistrates’ chambers, and a library. The ground floor level has administrative offices and holding cells. (

The Grand Court is the supreme court of the Cayman Islands. It has unlimited jurisdiction in both criminal and civil matters. Judges of the Grand Court are appointed and must have the same qualifications as are required for the English High Court of Justice or Courts of equivalent jurisdiction throughout the British Commonwealth of Nations.
The Cayman Islands Judicial System now runs 10 courtrooms a day on average and has outgrown the building. While a new courthouse is being planned, the Cayman Islands has acquired the Scotia complex on Cardinal Avenue in downtown George Town provide space to to handle the overload.
