John Carney was a Private serving in the Florida Mounted Volunteer Militia during the Third Seminole War. He had a farm just east of Tampa's Fort Brooke and had been ordered to return to his farm to raise crops for food for the troops fighting the Seminoles.
On April 15th or 16th in 1856 he died from one of five gunshot wounds he received by attacking Seminoles. His body was found a day after a neighbor had heard gunshots coming from the Carney farm. He was buried where he was killed.
Sometime in April of 2004 a local jogger noticed that the original headstone had been vandalized and was destroyed (photo in gallery). A newer headstone is at the grave at this time.
Additional photos in the gallery include the Muster-out Roll for Pvt. Carney and a newspaper article.
