The Hill–Stead was created Alfred Atmore Pope between 1898 and 1901. It was designed in the Colonial Revival style by his daughter Theodate Pope Riddle and Egerton Swartwout of the architectural firm of McKim, Mead, and White. Theodate inherited the house from her parents and willed the Hill–Stead Museum as a memorial to her parents for the benefit of the public. The house and its contents remain intact.

The art collection of Alfred Atmore Pope on display at Hill-Stead includes a collection of French impressionist paintings by Edgar Degas and Claude Monet, along with major works by Mary Cassatt, Edouard Manet, James McNeill Whistler, and others. Also are sculptures by Antoine-Louis Barye and Alexander Stirling Calder. The decorative arts collection includes works in glass, silver, pottery, and ceramics.
