Lake Egirdir, like the other neighboring lakes is an endoreic lake, its water coming mainly from rainfall and snowmelt remains fresh like those of Lake Beysehir. It is the fourth largest natural lake in Turkey with an area of 570 km2.

The lake is divided into two parts by the Hoyran Strait which is only 1.5 km wide. The southern part is the larger and forms Lake Egirdir proper; the northern part is called Lake Hoyran.

The number of fish species has decreased since in the 1955s perch were introduced into the lake, which caused other species to disappear. Until the 1980s, the lake provided the most important crayfish production in Turkey. This fishery produced an important income for the region. Crayfish have since virtually disappeared. The two reasons given for the near disappearance are predation by perch and a disease caused by mold.

The banks of the lake are often steep, but on the Gelendost and Uluborlu plains the banks are rather flat with reedbeds which are ecologically important environments. Near the railway station of Egirdir, there is a sandy beach that allows safe swimming; the lake is shallow and one can walk up to 200 m from the shore.

Another beach is located near Bedre, 11 km from Egirdir on the western shore of the lake.

The island of Can (Can Ada) and the Green Island (Yesil Ada), formerly known as Nis, extend the cape on which the city is built. The Green Island contains the church of St. Stephen (Turkish: Ayastefanos) a holy place for Christians.

On the northern shore of the lake, there are hypogeums dating from the Phrygian era and earlier. In the lake of Hoyran, the island of Limenia (Limenia Adasi) has hypogeums that are dug into its slopes. The island is surrounded by walls and housed a temple of Artemis and later a monastery dedicated to Mary.
