Lou Costello was born in Paterson NJ in 1906 (birth name Cristillo). Pursuing his dream to become an actor in silent films, he hitchhiked to Hollywood in 1927 but with little success. Upon returning east, he met and teamed up with producer Bud Abbott while performing on the burlesque circuit. When Costello’s “straight man” got sick and couldn’t perform, Abbott filled in for him and the rest, as they say, is history.

They appeared several times on Kate Smith’s popular radio show in the late 1930s and early 1940s and also on Edgar Bergen’s radio show before launching their own show on NBC radio in 1942. It was on the Kate Smith show that Abbott and Costello first performed their classic “Who’s on First?” routine.

Between 1940 and 1956, Abbott and Costello appeared in 36 movies and had become two of the most popular and highest paid entertainers in the world. Who can forget such classics as ‘Buck Privates,’ ‘Who Done It?’ and ‘Abbott and Costello in Hollywood?’ Svengoolie fans would be familiar with the horror/comedy classics ‘Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein’ and its obvious follow-up ‘Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man.’

Lou Costello suffered a heart attack in 1959 and died three days before his 53rd birthday. His remains are interred in the Calvary Cemetery mausoleum in Los Angeles.
