It has been selected as one of the "50 Best Lighthouses in Japan" for its location and beautiful white exterior.
The area has long been known as a difficult place for maritime traffic due to the strong tidal currents and numerous reefs. For this reason, a smoke signal stand has been built since the Edo period (1603-1867).
On December 15, 1899, a brick stone structure was built and lit for the first time.
March 11, 2011, the lights were turned off due to the Tohoku Earthquake. On November 30 of the same year, lights were turned on again for the first time in approximately nine months.
April 18, 2019, a commemorative project is launched to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the first lighting of the light, which will be celebrated on December 15 of the same year.
The lighthouse is open to the public (300 yen for admission, free for elementary school students and younger), and visitors can climb the stairs to the top and visit the lighthouse's archives and exhibition room.
Open 8:30-16:00 (admission 30 minutes prior) on 365 days but closed in stormy weather.
Free parking for 50 vehicles (10 large vehicles) is available.
