La station est implantée sous le boulevard des Invalides, au niveau de la place André-Tardieu. Orientée selon un axe nord-sud, elle s'intercale entre les stations Varenne et Duroc.
La station est ouverte le 30 décembre 1923 avec la mise en service du premier tronçon de la ligne 10 entre Invalides et l'actuelle station fantôme Croix-Rouge.
Elle doit sa dénomination à sa proximité avec l'église Saint-François-Xavier, dédiée à saint François Xavier (1506-1562), jésuite espagnol qui fonda des missions aux Indes, au Japon et en Chine.
The station is located under the boulevard des Invalides, at the level of the place André-Tardieu. Oriented along a north-south axis, it is inserted between the Varenne and Duroc stations.
The station opened on December 30, 1923 with the commissioning of the first section of line 10 between Invalides and the current Red Cross ghost station.
It owes its name to its proximity to the Saint-François-Xavier church, dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1562), a Spanish Jesuit who founded missions in India, Japan and China.
