In 1868 the Treaty of Fort Laramie set aside the Black Hills as Lakota territory. The US government states that battles in 1876 shifted the area back to the US and the Lakota People disagree with that. Whichever side you agree with, I think we can all agree that the nearly 400 workers that brought Gutzon Borglum sculpture into being did a fantastic job.
While visiting the memorial my wife and I met Don Clifford, one of the men that worked on the sculpture. Mr. Clifford also played on the worker baseball team.
