Seizure of Weston Bank Funds
Early on June 30, 1861, John List of Wheeling, under commission from Gov. Pierpont and with the help of the 7th Ohio Infantry, took charge of about $30,000 in gold held at the Weston branch of the Exchange Bank of VA. Pierpont feared that the Richmond government would use the money, allocated for building the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum to fill the Confederate war chest.
