The resplendent Wawel Cathedral is part of the Wawel Castle complex and a major landmark in the city of Kraków. As the official seat of the Archdiocese of Kraków, the cathedral hosts important religious celebrations and other events. Historically, it has been the coronation site for many Polish monarchs, and also their final resting place.

A cathedral of sorts has stood on this spot since the 11th century. The early structures either burned or were destroyed. Construction on the current building began in the 14th century with multiple additions and modifications made over the years often at the whim of the current King and completed in whatever architectural style was in vogue at the time. The resulting edifice is an eclectic composite of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical and Neogothic elements.

Buried in the crypt are over a dozen Polish Kings, military engineer Tadeusz Kosciuszko, who is a national hero of Poland and the United States, and the great Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, among many others.
