Description

This majestic oak located in the Offlarde wood was used by the Germans during the First World War as an observation post. It measures 40 m in height and is said to be 200 to 300 years old.

You can still see some of the iron rungs that were inserted into the trunk to form a ladder.

As the tree continued to grow, most of the bars were swallowed under the bark.

Every day, the soldiers from the nearby cantonment post climbed there to observe the surroundings and see the planes arriving flying over the Lille-Lens railway line.

Ce chêne majestueux situé dans le bois de l’Offlarde était utilisé par les Allemands lors de la Première Guerre mondiale comme poste d’observation. Il mesure 40 m de hauteur et aurait 200 à 300 ans.

On peut toujours voir quelques-uns des barreaux de fer qui ont été insérés dans le tronc afin de constituer une échelle.

L'arbre ayant continué à pousser, la majorité des barreaux a été avalée sous l’écorce.

Chaque jour, les soldats du poste de cantonnement voisin y grimpaient pour observer les alentours et voir arriver les avions qui survolaient la ligne de chemin de fer Lille-Lens.
