Descrição
Monumento composto por base e pedestal tronco piramidal, de mármore tipo lioz, onde apoia a estátua de bronze do Infante D. Henrique. Na base voltada a S. uma placa de bronze com a inscrição: "Ao Infante D. Henrique no 550º Aniversário do seu nascimento. A cidade do Porto". Entre a base e o pedestal destacam-se para N. e S. dois grupos escultóricos em bronze, representando respectivamente as alegorias da Fé e do Triunfo da Navegação Portuguesa. A primeira, uma figura feminina, com asas e empunhando uma cruz na mão direita e a segunda, a proa de um navio arrastada por dois cavalos, aos quais servem de guias um tritão e uma nereide. Sobre a proa ergue-se uma outra figura feminina (Glória), empunhando uma bandeira. O pedestal é contornado a meia altura por um friso constituído por uma sucessão de escudos com a cruz de Cristo. Na parte inferior deste friso, na face O. do pedestal a data de "1418 - 1433" e uma inscrição votiva ao Porto que diz: "Ao Infante D. Henrique, Iniciador dos Descobrimentos dos Portugueses. O Porto, sua pátria. Dedica". Na face E. a data de "1419 - 1432" e a inscrição dos Lusíadas: "Assi fomos abrindo aqueles mares, que geração alguma não abriu, As novas ilhas vendo e os novos ares. Que o generoso Henrique descobriu, Lusíadas, Canto 5º, IV". Superiormente, o pedestal vai reduzindo a secção sendo subdividido por três ordens de molduras, apresenta entre a segunda e a terceira dois baixos relevos, na face N. a tomada de Ceuta sobrepujada pelo brasão do Porto e na S. o Infante no promontório de Sagres. A encimar o pedestal, uma moldura saliente, extremamente decorada, com as armas portuguesas nos cunhais e tarjas datadas entre elas. Sobre o pedestal a figura do Infante voltado ao rio Douro, de pé e cabeça descoberta, vestido de cavaleiro levanta o braço direito. Atrás o globo terrestre.

Enquadramento
Urbano, isolado, implantada no centro da placa ajardinada da Pç. Infante D. Henrique e no enfiamento visual da R. com o mesmo nome. O monumento é enquadrado por duas palmeiras e possui como pano de fundo o Mercado Ferreira Borges. Esta praça rectangular e inclinada apresenta a delimitá-la vários imóveis classificados: a N. o Mercado Ferreira Borges, a O. o Palácio da Bolsa e Igreja de São Francisco e a S. o Restaurante Comercial e a Igreja de São Nicolau.
Descrição Complementar
Na parte inferior de todos os grupos escultóricos aparece gravado numa face, em cada uma das extremidades as referências ao autor e ao executante: "TH Costa. Paris 1899" e "Leblanc Barbedienne. Fondeur Paris". No contorno da parte inferior do pedestal e da base aparecem diversas placas comemorativas da Academia Portuguesa de História, dos Bombeiros e etc.

1882, Março - É proposta à Sociedade de Instrução do Porto, por J. Eduardo Von Hafe a intenção de se construir um monumento comemorativo do V centenário do nascimento do Infante "1394 -1894"; 26 Julho - Decreto que determina a aquisição do bronze pelo governo para a sua execução; 1889 - é realizado o 1º sarau para a recolha de fundos para o monumento; 1893, 19 Abril - a Câmara decide assumir as comemorações do centenário henriquino; 27 Julho - obteve-se do Governo uma emissão de estampilhas para venda, desenhadas pelo pintor Veloso Salgado impressas na Alemanha; Maio - aberto concurso para escritores, para melhor monografia sobre a vida e feitos do Infante; realizou-se concurso entre artistas nacionais para o monumento; 1894, 1 Julho - é nomeado em reunião de Câmara o júri do concurso; lançamento da primeira pedra; 1899 - fundição das peças em Paris por Leblanc Barbedienne ; 1900, 19 Outubro - inauguração com a presença do Rei D. Carlos e a Rainha Dª. Amélia; 1998 - a CMP encomenda estudos para a execução de um parque de estacionamento subterrâneo na Praça do Infante D. Henrique.

O mármore foi oferecido por Alfredo Tait e veio de Sagres. Soares dos Reis pertencente à Comissão encarregada das comemorações chegou a pensar oferecer o projecto e a modelação da estátua. A última comissão era constituída pelo conselheiro Costa e Almeida, Padre Patrício, Conde de Samodães, Augusto Luso, H. C. Meireles Kendall, Fernando Maia e Bento Carqueja. O 1º e 2º prémio da melhor monografia sobre o Infante foram respectivamente: Alfredo Alves e Fortunato de Almeida. Os concorrentes para a estátua foram: Ventura Terra, Marques da Silva e irmãos Teixeira Lopes, um anónimo, Adães Bermudes e Tomaz Costa. O primeiro prémio foi Tomaz Costa e o segundo prémio Ventura Terra.

EN:" Civil architecture, romantic. Romantic sculptural monument, with a base and a pedestal in the shape of a sectioned quadrangular pyramid trunk, which features two sculptural groups at the base and one at the upper bronze finish.
Description
Monument composed of pyramidal trunk base and pedestal, of lioz marble, where it supports the bronze statue of Infante D. Henrique. At the base facing S. a bronze plaque with the inscription: "To Infante D. Henrique on the 550th anniversary of his birth. The city of Porto". Between the base and the pedestal, two bronze sculptural groups stand out for N. and S., representing respectively the allegories of the Faith and the Triumph of Portuguese Navigation. The first, a female figure, with wings and wielding a cross in his right hand and the second, the bow of a ship dragged by two horses, to which a newt and a nereid serve as guides. On the bow stands another female figure (Glory), wielding a flag. The pedestal is contoured at half height by a frieze consisting of a succession of shields with the cross of Christ. At the bottom of this frieze, on the O. face of the pedestal the date of "1418 - 1433" and a votive inscription to Porto that says: "To Infante D. Henrique, Initiator of the Discoveries of the Portuguese. Porto, your homeland. Dedica". On the E. face the date of "1419 - 1432" and the inscription of the Lusiads: "Assi we were opening those seas, which no generation did not open, The new islands seeing and the new airs. That the generous Henry discovered, Lusiads, Canto 5o, IV". Superiorly, the pedestal reduces the section by being subdivided into three orders of frames, presents between the second and third two low reliefs, on face N. the taking of Ceuta surpassed by the coat of arms of Porto and in the S. the Infante on the promontory of Sagres. Enjoining the pedestal, a protruding frame, extremely decorated, with the Portuguese weapons on the wedges and stripes dated between them. On the pedestal, the figure of the Infante facing the Douro River, standing and uncovered, dressed as a knight raises his right arm. Behind the globe.

Framework
Urban, isolated, implanted in the center of the landscaped plate of Pç. Infante D. Henrique and in the visual threading of R. with the same name. The monument is framed by two palm trees and has as its backdrop the Ferreira Borges Market. This rectangular and sloping square has to delimit it several classified properties: the N. Ferreira Borges Market, the O. the Stock Exchange Palace and Church of San Francisco and the S. the Commercial Restaurant and the Church of São Nicolau.
Complementary Description
At the bottom of all sculptural groups appears engraved on one side, at each end the references to the author and the performer: "TH Costa. Paris 1899" and "Leblanc Barbedienne. Fondeur Paris". On the contour of the bottom of the pedestal and the base appear several commemorative plaques of the Portuguese Academy of History, Firefighters and etc.

Observations
The marble was offered by Alfredo Tait and came from Sagres. Soares dos Reis, belonging to the Commission in charge of the celebrations, even thought of offering the design and modeling of the statue. The last commission consisted of Councilor Costa e Almeida, Father Patrick, Count of Samodães, Augusto Luso, H. C. Meireles Kendall, Fernando Maia and Bento Carqueja. The 1st and 2nd prizes of the best monograph on Infante were respectively: Alfredo Alves and Fortunato de Almeida. The competitors for the statue were: Ventura Terra, Marques da Silva and brothers Teixeira Lopes, an anonymous, Adães Bermudes and Tomaz Costa. The first prize was Tomaz Costa and the second prize Ventura Terra.
