Sand City, population 304, is the smallest of the communities on the Monterey Peninsula. A two block part of Fremont Street belongs to Sand City and this is where the Sand City welcome sign and the flag post are located.

The flag of Sand City Consists of two vertical stripes in white and yellow, with the white stripe being twice as high as the yellow one. On the hoist side, centered vertically, is the city’s seal, overlapped by the words SAND CITY. CALIFORNIA is written in the yellow stripe on the fly side. The letters and the seal are held in marine blue.

Sand City’s seal is a stylized sand dune with a cloud and two seagulls in the back.

Until 1970, when the damming of the Salinas River stopped the supply of fresh sediments, sand mining was a profitable business and sand was the main export good of the Monterey Peninsula (as a matter of fact, the Hawaiian islands are volcanic and originally only had black sand beaches. All the white sand at Waikiki and other places was imported from here.) Sand City was one of these sand mines and the white and yellow colors of the flag stand for the sand while the blue symbolizes the nearby ocean.
