Wooden rood screen and reredos in St Andrew's church, Loxton.
The old oak rood screen dates to about 1501 in the Perpendicular style of the time. Largely restored, but original features like the linen fold panels still remain.
There is a carving of a half-rose/half-pomegranate on the inside of the doorway arch, this could be symbolic of the union of the House of Tudor (Rose), with the House of Aragon (Pomegranate) in 1501.
Behind the pulpit is the stairway which led to the Rood on the Screen. It is quite clear that the present screen is not in its original position, as the door to the rood is a few feet in front of the screen today.
Although much later in date, the wooden reredos now form part of a 'whole' for the chancel, which is paneled on all sides with wood. The new reredos, with excellent detail, was added in 1913.
There is a comprehensive archeological survey, with fuller description of the rood and screen in this document - (
