This lock is the eastern of two locks in the area called Petite France in the city of Strasbourg. It is on the canalised river Ill and is no longer used by commercial or private traffic. Nowadays only trip boats are allowed to use this lock.
It must have been fascinating using this lock as a private boater as this part of the river runs through the old fortifications of the city. Mind you it would have been quite interesting using the lock in front of the large number of tourists that flock to the old part of town.
Commercial and private boats wishing to join the Canal du Rhône au Rhin from the Canal de la Marne au Rhin must now pass through the large ports of Strasbourg which are positioned off the River Rhine that runs to the east of the city.
Waterway Name: River Ill
Connected Points: The navigable Ill runs from the junction with the Canal de la Marne au Rhin outside the European Parliament building for a distance of just under 10 kilometres. The other, or upstream, end joins the Canal du Rhône au Rhin. The river has connections with the abandoned Canal du Faux-Remparts and the abandoned Canal de la Bruche.
