Archery first appeared in the modern Olympic games in 1900. It continued as an event in various formats sporadically through the 1920 games when it disappeared for over fifty years returning in 1972. It has been a staple of the modern games ever since.

For the Los Angeles games in 1984, a temporary venue was established at El Dorado Regional Park in Long Beach. Americans Darrell Pace and Richard McKinney won the gold and silver medals respectively in the men’s competition while South Korea and China dominated the women’s competition.

The grandstands and other infrastructure built in support of the Olympic games are all gone now but the range is still there, managed by the city of Long Beach. Classes are offered by the El Dorado Archers, a local archery club.
