Starbucks is 's werelds grootste keten van koffiehuizen. Op 1 oktober 2017 had het 27.339 vestigingen in 76 landen, waaronder meer dan 14.000 in de Verenigde Staten, 1400 in Canada en meer dan 900 in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Ongeveer de helft van de vestigingen zijn in eigendom en de rest wordt door andere bedrijven uitgebaat of zijn onderdeel van een joint venture met een andere onderneming. De Volksrepubliek China had 2916 vestigingen en staat op de 2e plaats met het aantal locaties na de VS.
Naast koffie verkopen de Starbucks-winkels ook andere koude en warme dranken, koffiebonen, salades, sandwiches, snacks en gebak. Bovendien biedt Starbucks boeken, muziek en film aan via de Starbucks Entertainment-afdeling en het merk Hear Music. In supermarkten worden koffiebonen, roomijs en ijskoffie van Starbucks verkocht.
Er zijn ook Starbucks-vestigingen in andere winkels, zoals boekhandels, tankstations en op stations.
De franchise-ondernemers betalen Starbucks een fractie van hun omzet als een vergoeding voor het gebruik van de Starbucks naam en formule. De eigen vestigingen realiseren 80% in de totale omzet en de bijdrage van alle franchisevestigingen was iets meer dan 10% in 2017.
