"Zell is a Roman foundation after 70 A.D. The district Kaimt is first mentioned in a document in 732/33. In 1222 Zell received the town charter. Since 1332 Zell was a city of the Electorate of Trier and until 1794 the seat of the Electorate of Trier's Zell Office. With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine in 1794 by French revolutionary troops, the town became French. In 1815, at the Congress of Vienna, the town was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia. Fires in 1848 and 1857 destroyed a large part of the old town. Since 1946, the town has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1950 the incorporation of Kaimt took place. Until 1969, Zell was the district town of the district of Zell (Mosel). Within the framework of the administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate, this then became the district of Cochem-Zell with the administrative seat in Cochem. With the district seat, Zell also lost numerous other administrative offices and other institutions. At the same time, Merl was incorporated. The town also compensated for this loss by settling numerous business enterprises, especially in the high-altitude district of Barl.
On June 7, 1969, the previously independent community of Merl was incorporated."
