The Albert Gersten Pavilion, on the campus of Loyola Marymount University, was only three years old when it played host to the 1984 Olympic weightlifting competition. The boycott of these games by the Soviet Union and most eastern bloc nations affected some sports more than others. Weightlifting was particularly hard hit as the two most dominate teams (the Soviet Union and Bulgaria) sat out. Rushing in to fill that vacuum was China and Romania winning 14 total medals, 6 of them gold.
The Gersten Pavilion was built in anticipation of hosting an Olympic event and now is home to the Loyola Marymount Lions basketball team.
