"The Hippodrome de la Prairie is a trotting racecourse located in the Prairie in Caen (Calvados).
Story
Former grandstands of the Hippodrome de la Prairie.
The first race of trotters was organized in the Prairie on August 26, 1837 by the Society of Agriculture and Commerce of Caen. On February 13, 1839, the city decided to create a permanent racetrack. In August of the following year, it was agreed to build stands to house the spectators. In 1845, the earth resulting from the digging of the canal from Caen to the sea was poured into the Prairie in order to develop the racecourse.
On October 21, 1864, the Encouragement Society for the Improvement of the French Half-Breed Horse was created in Caen in order to regulate the code of trotting races for the whole of France. Later transferred to Paris, it became the French Horse Encouragement Society.
In 1868, Henri Rochefort estimated that Caen “has [...] the most beautiful known racecourse. The stands, with a capacity of 1,000 seats, were inaugurated on August 1, 1880.
The racecourse was completely renovated in 1970 and new stands were built."
