Shel Silverstein began his creative career by drawings cartoons while serving in the military. His first book was a compilation of these cartoons published by Pacific Stars & Stripes. During the late 1950s and 1960s, Silverstein’s cartoons appeared in various magazines such as ‘Look,’ ‘Sports Illustrated’ and most notably ‘Playboy’ which sent him around the world to produce a feature called "Shel Silverstein Visits..."

Silverstein was also a prolific songwriter. Although he occasionally sang his own songs, he generally wrote for other recording artists. A sampling of Silverstein’s songs includes “25 Minutes to Go” and “A Boy Named Sue” for Johnny Cash; “Put Another Log on the Fire” for Tompall Glaser; “One's on the Way” for Loretta Lynn; “The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone’” and “Sylvia's Mother” for Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show; and “The Unicorn” for the Irish Rovers among many, many others.

But what Shel Silverstein is best remembered for is his children’s books, even though he was reluctant to write them initially. His most memorable titles include “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” “A Giraffe and a Half,” “Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?” and “The Giving Tree.” His books have been translated into 47 foreign languages and many have remained on best-seller lists for years.
