De Schildpad - Nieuwpoort - Belgium - Figurative Public Sculpture on Waymarking.com

Deze reusachtige schildpad is een van de bekendste werken van Beaufort. Tijdens de eerste editie van Beaufort in 2003 stond het werk op de zeedijk van Nieuwpoort. Omdat het beeld er wind en zand moest trotseren, werd het na een grondige restauratie en met een nieuw laagje bladgoud, verhuisd naar het plein voor het Centrum Ysara. Daar wordt het omgeven door een watergordijn. Op de rug van de bronzen zeeschildpad zie je de ruiter zitten, turend in de verte, op zoek naar Utopia.

Het beeld is met bladgoud belegd en schittert dus ook letterlijk. De keuze voor bladgoud moet ook toelaten dat in de toekomst de buitenlaag nog kan gerestaureerd worden. Het beeld weegt ruim vijf ton en is eigenlijk een zelfportret. Het is Jan Fabre zelf die is afgebeeld, schrijlings over een schildpad gezeten, alsof hij te paard rijdt. Het is een ode aan de verbeelding.

This giant turtle is one of the best known works of Beaufort. During the first edition of Beaufort in 2003 the work stood on the seawall of Nieuwpoort. Because the sculpture had to face wind and sand there, it was moved to the square in front of the Ysara Centre after a thorough restoration and a new layer of gold leaf. There it is surrounded by a water curtain. On the back of the bronze turtle you can see the rider sitting, peering into the distance, in search of Utopia.

The sculpture is covered with gold leaf and therefore literally glitters. The choice for gold leaf should also allow for the possibility of restoring the outer layer in the future. The sculpture weighs over five tons and is actually a self-portrait. It is Jan Fabre himself who is depicted straddling a tortoise, as if riding a horse. It is an ode to the imagination.
