On 25 April 1916, the first anniversary of the landing of the Australians at ANZAC Cove at Gallipoli (part of the ill-fated Dardanelles campaign) a fund was opened to raise money to erect a permanent war memorial in Sydney. By the end of the war the fund had reached 60,000 pounds.
The Art Deco memorial was designed by C. Bruce Dellit and is a concrete structure clad in stone with sculptures by Raynor Hoff. Each external corner has crouching servicemen looking like medieval gargoyles.
Inside, the central motif is the statue Sacrifice - the figure of a young warrior. His body lies upon a shield and sword supported by three women - his mother, wife and sister. One of them is carrying a child, the symbol for the future generations for whom the sacrifice has been made.
The Memorial was officially opened by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Gloucester on 24 November 1934.
