Levie Katan was a paper merchant and manufacturer of paper bags. In 1932 the family moved from Rotterdam to Schiedam. During the war it was no longer safe on the Lange Haven. They were there between the Kringhuis of the NSB and the SD office. The family went into hiding on the Schiedamseweg in Rotterdam.
Nowadays we hear harrowing stories about the boat refugees and the people smugglers who earn a lot of money and often drive their victims to death in rickety boats and worthless life jackets.
However, there is nothing new under the sun. Something similar happened to the Katan family. The family was hiding on the Schiedamseweg in Rotterdam and wanted to flee to Switzerland where they would be safe for the rest of the war.
The Katan family came into contact with someone who would smuggle them to Switzerland for a large sum of money. They were also allowed to take all their money and jewelry with them. One morning a car pulled up and the family got in. They drove via Marconiplein, Mathenesserweg and Mathenesserbrug and stopped just over the bridge. The driver wanted to get some cigarettes. He got out and the Sicherheitsdienst got in. The end point was not Switzerland, but Auschwitz.
