The liberation monument reminds the inhabitants of Schiedam of all fellow citizens who died during the occupation years as a result of war violence and of the regained freedom and peace.

Establishment
The municipality of Schiedam has commissioned artist Jan van Luyn to make the monument, because the original liberation monument ('Het Naakt' by Pieter Starreveld) was not accepted as an official memorial. 'The Nude' was banned 'as an ornament' to a hidden corner in Juliana Park. However, this decision was revised in the municipal council meeting of 27 February 1967. The statue was formally given 'the status of a liberation monument'. That is why Schiedam has two official liberation monuments.

Reveal
The monument was unveiled on May 4, 1955.

Shape and material
The liberation monument in Schiedam is a bronze statue of a standing female figure who tears off her clothes in great despair. The statue is placed on a stone pedestal. The memorial is 2 meters 92 high, 1 meter 14 wide and 90 centimeters deep.

Text
The text on the pedestal is a quote from the poem The Carillion by Ida Gerhardt and reads:

'NOOIT HEB IK
WAT MIJ WERD ONTNOMEN
ZO BITTER, BITTER
LIEFGEHAD'.

The artwork is signed:

'J. v. LUYN – J.E. STOXEN'.
