In 1987 Hans was commissioned by the municipality of Schiedam to make a statue to commemorate the many handicrafts that have been done over the centuries for the production of jenever, the city's trade product. He designed a statue of the sack carrier, who did the heaviest work. The design was received with much approval, but there was one drawback: there was no budget to have it cast in bronze. In order to be able to realize the statue, it was decided that Hans would give the statue the suggestion of bronze. An iron frame, cement, a black-green patina with a number of layers of epoxy as a top coating proved to provide the desired effect. So it happened that he shaped the sculpture in his studio and later in the garden of his home, with a coating that resembled bronze. So it looked really good. However, the material was not strong enough to stand the test of time. The coating wore off and the statue became more and more damaged. Fortunately, Hans did not have to experience that anymore, because he passed away in 1991.
