Hans Cloos war ein berühmter Geologe. Er wurde 1885 in Magdeburg geboren und war Geologie-Professor an den Universitäten in Breslau und Bonn. Von seinen zahlreichen Publikationen war die bekannteste sein 1947 veröffentlichtes Buch "Gespräch mit der Erde", das geologisches Fachwissen erstmalig in einfacher Sprache erklärte und so der Allgemeinheit zugänglich machte. 1951 verstarb er in Bonn.

In der Nähe von Bonn ist im Siebengebirge eine Gedenktafel zu Ehren von Hans Cloos errichtet worden. Sie ist in eine Felswand am Drachenfels direkt unterhalb der Burgruine auf dem Gipfel des Drachenfelses eingelassen. Neben Abbildungen von Hans Cloos sowie von Gesteinsschichten ist auf der Tafel folgender Text zu lesen:

Der Drachenfels wurde als Ort für das Denkmal gewählt, weil Cloos insbesondere diesen Berg ausführlich studierte und so seine ursprüngliche Form und Höhe rekonstruieren konnte.

Die Gedenktafel wurde von der Geologischen Vereinigung e.V. errichtet. 1938 bis 1951 war Cloos Chefredakteur des Herausgebers von wissenschaftlichen Fachzeitschriften. Erreichbar ist die Tafel über den "Eselsweg", der Schloss Drachenburg und den Drachenfels miteinander verbindet.
Hans Cloos was a famous geologist. He was born in Magdeburg in 1885 and was a geology professor at the Universities of Breslau and Bonn. Of his numerous publications, the best known was his book "Conversation with the Earth", published in 1947, which for the first time explained geological expertise in simple language and thus made it accessible to the general public. He died in Bonn in 1951.

A memorial plaque in honor of Hans Cloos was erected in the Siebengebirge near Bonn. It is set into a rock face on the Drachenfels just below the castle ruins on top of the Drachenfels summit. In addition to images of Hans Cloos and rock strata, the following text can be read on the plaque (translated to English):

The Drachenfels was chosen as the location for the monument because Cloos studied particularly this mountain in detail and was able to reconstruct its original shape and height.

The commemorative plaque was erected by the association Geologische Vereinigung e.V.. From 1938 to 1951 Cloos was editor-in-chief of the publisher of scientific journals. The plaque can be reached via the path "Eselsweg", which connects Drachenburg Castle and the Drachenfels.
