“Black is the most aristocratic color of all.... You can be quiet, and it contains the whole thing.” - Louise Nevelson

Where would you find the grave of someone who was born in Russia, grew up in Maine and lived in New York City?... Acworth, New Hampshire, of course. Louise Nevelson was born in Kiev but immigrated to the United States with her family when she was about 5 or 6 years old. They settled in Rockland, Maine where Louise grew up, graduated from school and met Charles Nevelson whom she married. The couple then moved to New York where Louise gave birth to her only child, a son named Myron (Mike) Nevelson who later became a sculptor himself. It was her son who was living in Acworth, NH at the time of Louise Nevelson’s death, and who had her cremated remains buried in the Acworth Cemetery.

Louise Nevelson had a lifelong interest in art which blossomed in New York’s artistic community. (This didn’t sit well with her husband’s family and eventually led to their divorce.) She began her artistic career with paintings and lithography but gravitated toward her real desire: sculpture. Experimenting with some scrap wood pieces she found in the streets, Louise Nevelson developed her signature style: stacked boxes containing arrangements of variously shaped wooden pieces which were then painted a single color - at first black, but later white and sometimes gold. These abstract sculptures can be rather large, and some were installed as permanent wall pieces. Examples of Nevelson’s work can be found in most major art museums. I’ve included a couple of photos of pieces that I’ve seen.
