The Blob was a low budget sci-fi movie. Much of it was filmed in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, including the sequence at the movie theater.
The kids were watching a late night spooky flick when the blob entered the theater. After the viewers realized that there was a real monster in the theater, everyone ran out the front door.
Phoenixville holds an annual Blob Fest, with the recreation of this scene as part of the fun.
