Eighty years of Janssen's Ice Cream Parlor
BOSKOOP – It is an ice cream parlor like all ice cream parlors. Or maybe not? Not, if you hear most Boskoopers about Janssen's IJssalon. It is the most beautiful ice cream parlor in the area with 30 different ice creams in the ice cream display. Turned fresh every day. Using the same process for eighty years, but of course with today's technology.
In the crisis years, Frans Janssen came up with a way to get extra money in addition to his income from café De Landbouw. Frans bought a sharpening machine and started sharpening skates. The ice machine he ran into a short time later could provide extra income in the summer, but the machine was dated and the ice turning took a lot of muscle. Frans was able to come up with something about that. In 1937 he linked the technique of the skate sharpening machine to the ice machine and bought his first ice cream truck. In the years that followed, he bought a few more ice cream carts. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, he bought the property next to 'De Landbouw' and Janssen's IJssalon was opened in 1947, the first and still only ice cream parlor in Boskoop.
Now his grandson and namesake Frans Janssen owns it. In 1999, the year in which Janssen's IJssalon was named the best ice cream parlor in the Netherlands by the AD, both the ice cream parlor, Frans' home and his parental home were completely demolished to make way for one large ice cream parlor with several seats. In 2017, eighty years after Frans Janssen released his first ice cream, Janssen's IJssalon is a busy establishment and a household name in the Green Heart. Frans Janssen is still happy with the result of the unexpected visit to his ice cream parlor, where the Algemeen Dagblad team tested the ice cream for taste, color and composition and proclaimed Janssen's IJssalon the best ice cream parlor in the Netherlands. But he attaches much more importance to the monthly inspection company hired by himself, which tests the ice for bacteria, "Just to keep us on our toes".
