L’imposante Église Saint-Zotique, consacrée à un soldat byzantin martyr de la Foi, assassiné au IVe siècle, se trouve au numéro 4561, rue Notre-Dame.
Ses origines viennent de l’année 1908, quand les paroissiens de Sainte-Élisabeth-du-Portugal, du village Turcot et de Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, présentent des requêtes conjointes à leur évêque dans le but de la constitution d’une nouvelle paroisse. En 1909, l’évêque de Montréal, Mgr Bruchesi décrète l’érection canonique de Saint-Zotique.
L’année suivante, les habitants de Saint-Henri choisissent l’emplacement de la future église face à l’actuel charmant parc George-Étienne-Cartier. Les dessins sont conçus par les architectes MacDuff et Lemieux.
L’église Saint-Zotique est, en effet, l’une des rares églises catholiques de l’époque dont le parement est réalisé en brique en non en pierre, parce que la symbolique de la permanence de la pierre est, de fait, ancrée dans la tradition française des constructions religieuses.
Toutefois, les angles des tours et des piliers sont accentués par des redents de pierre. La façade est resserrée entre des piliers afin de l’articuler avec un minimum d’éléments. Une légèreté gracieuse est caractéristique des deux clochers symétriques.
The imposing Saint-Zotique Church, dedicated to a Byzantine soldier. a Christian a martyr, who was assassinated in the 4th century, is located at number 4561 rue Notre-Dame.
Its origins start in 1908, when the parishioners of Sainte-Élisabeth-du-Portugal, of the villages of Turcot and of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, presented joint requests to their bishop for the purpose of establishing a new parish. In 1909, the Bishop of Montreal, Mgr Bruchesi decreed by canon the formation of Saint-Zotique.
The following year, the parishioners of Saint-Henri chose the location of the future church to face the charming Parc George-Étienne-Cartier. The drawings were designed by the architects MacDuff and Lemieux.
The Saint-Zotique church is, in fact, one of the rare Catholic churches of the time whose facing is made of brick rather than stone. Stone has long symbolized permanence and is anchored in the French tradition of religious constructions.
However, the corners of the bell towers and front pillars are accentuated by stone indents. The front facade between the pillars has a minimumal number of elements. A graceful lightness is surrounded by two symmetrical bell towers.
