This pillar marks the summit of Kerloch, a 534 metre (1747 feet) hill and the most easterly height over 1,500 feet in Scotland. The heather-bound hill lies on the watershed of the Mounth, the eastern plateau of the Grampian Mountains and lies five miles directly south of the town of Banchory in Aberdeenshire. The pillar has a crack at flush bracket height but is otherwise in good condition. It shares the summit with a cairn which lies a few yards lower to the east. Views are best to the north-west towards the higher mountains, and the North Sea is visible out to the east.

STEEPNESS: A steep climb up both east and south-west flanks, but easily manageable.

TERRAIN: Tracks and paths carved out of forest and heather all the way to the summit.

ACCESSIBILITY: A track, the old drover route from Deeside to The Mearns, called the Stockmounth, runs east of the hill. There is a car parking area just over two miles north of the summit at the beginning of the track off the minor road between the B974 and A957 roads. A longer route uses forest tracks to the west, before swinging around to come up the south-west side of the hill.

NAVIGATION: The Stockmounth track heads south for a mile and a half before heading into Glenskinnan Forest. Just before a barrier and a signpost, a narrow path branches off to the right to climb up through the forest to emerge onto the eastern flank of the hill. This path by-passes the summit to the south, but a narrower path branches right to climb to the summit pillar and cairn.

DANGER: Fallen trees in the climb up the forest path.
