William Graham was born December 19th, 1745, in the township of Paxton, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the college of New Jersey in 1773 and later studied theology and became a Presbyterian Minister in Hanover, Pennsylvania in 1775. A few years later Mr. Graham moved to Virginia where he began teaching in a school, which was first known as “the classical school” in Mount Pleasant. A few years later Reverend Graham moved the school to the Timber Ridge Area of Rockbrigde County. Reverend Graham found it difficult to support his family on the income from teaching and ministering to two churches, Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church and Hall’s Meeting House, he once again moved to the area around present day Lexington, Virginia. Here he continued to teach in his own house until 1872, when his school was incorporated under the name of “Liberty Hall Academy.” Liberty Hall grew and was endowed by General George Washington and became known as Washington College. Washington College is known today as Washington & Lee University.

Reverend Graham was an ardent patriot and veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Following the war, Reverend Graham moved to Richmond Virginia where he lived out the rest of his life. He died on June 8, 1799, and his remains were returned to Lexington and buried on the Campus of Washington and Lee University. Today Reverend Graham’s grave is located adjacent to Lee Chapel.
