The Japanese Lantern is a gift given by Tokyo, Japan to the People of the United States. The Lantern was created in 1651 as a pair of lanterns honoring the death of Tokugawa Iemitsu. The second lantern is still in Ueno Park.
Today the lantern is kept by the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park in Washington D.C. Since it's dedication in 1954, the lantern has been lit for the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Seiichiro Yasui was the governor of Tokyo who was responsible for sending this and other lanterns to the United States, including the Kan Ei Ji Temple Lantern in Philadelphia.
