Humped Bladderwort, Utricularia gibba, can be found in this shallow fresh water pond.
Bladderworts are a floating aquatic plant. They have under water bladders filled with a vacuum. When the trigger hairs are touched the bladder opens, sucking the small animal into the bladder. The soft parts of the animal are digested. Mosquito larvae are about the largest creature that can be caught.
This pond has a heavy crop of cattails growing around about 75% of the shore line. Occasionally there is an opening in the cattails where you can observe the shore and shallow water. At the given coordinates is one such opening where I observed the greatest quantity of Bladderworts. They had been wind blown to the shore forming a floating mat. There were around 100 blooming plants in this area. I also spotted other Bladderwort plants as I made my way along the western shore but they were few in number.
Be aware that this pond is near the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical storms do flood this pond and the surrounding lands. Even the parking area can get flooded. It may take several weeks for the water to drop to normal level and the land to dry out for safe hiking.
Only volunteers maintain this conservation area. Trails may become overgrown with weeds between mowing.
