Where do you go to find buildings depicted on Polish postage stamps? Warsaw? Or maybe Krakow? How about the small village of Orchard Lake about 25 miles north of Detroit? Here, on the campus of the Orchard Lake Schools, is the Ark building, which houses a significant collection of artifacts, archives and rare books related to the Polish diaspora in America, and which appears on a Polish postage stamp.
The Orchard Lake Schools, formerly known as the Polish Seminary, was established in Detroit in 1885 to train priests to minister to the growing number of Polish immigrants in the American Midwest. It moved to its current location in 1909. The current campus consists of three schools (SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, Saint Mary's College of Ave Maria University and Saint Mary's Preparatory High School) as well as several other buildings housing museums, libraries, an art gallery and archives.
