Originally built for the Johnson Wax pavilion at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, the Golden Rondelle has been relocated to the SC Johnson Corporate Headquarters complex in Racine, Wisconsin.

Yes, I’m old enough to remember the ’64-’65 New York World’s Fair. And I remember the Johnson Wax pavilion with its striking architecture incorporating the company’s logo and 500-seat golden rondelle theater. The exhibit featured an 18-minute film called “To Be Alive!” - a montage of life experiences from all over the world with a kind of ‘up with people’ theme. After waiting in line for over an hour, I found the film to be a bit of a letdown: But that was the opinion of a seven-year-old and should not be taken seriously.
After the fair, the pavilion, designed by the firm of Lippincott & Margulies was meticulously disassembled and the golden rondelle theater was moved to Racine Wisconsin where Johnson Wax was headquartered. Their main administrative building and R&D tower were already architecturally significant, having been designed by Wisconsin native Frank Lloyd Wright.
The Golden Rondelle has been incorporated into a new building designed by Taliesin Associated Architects which serves as a theater for both corporate and public events. Today, it is the starting point for tours of the SC Johnson campus and the film “To Be Alive!” is also shown occasionally.
