During the intense fighting of the Civil War in 1864, the congregation of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church planned to build their church. Architect Patrick Keely designed the symmetrical Gothic Revival style church. The cornerstone was laid on May 5, 1865 and the church was dedicated on June 15, 1866.

A set of three steps leads up brownstone façade of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church where there are three entrances set within Gothic arches, protruding, a larger entrance in the center is flanked by two slightly smaller entrances which are set back on the main block of the church. Above the entrances are stained glass windows set within Gothic arches. The center window is larger than the other two.

The center section rises above the main block where there is a lancet window, a belfry with two louvered windows joined on top by a triangular window, a clock set within a Gothic arch, and a tapered hexagonal steeple topped by a finial.

The sides of the church have a three-sided tower with tapered roofs. Then three large Gothic style windows, a set of stone columns framing a double stained glass window and three more Gothic style windows. Immediately below the gable roof are eight triangular windows.
