"In 1918, the Royal Dutch Salt Industry was founded in Boekelo, a predecessor of AkzoNobel. The company received a concession in 1933 to drill for salt at Hengelo as well. The following year, the first drilling rig was installed to pump the water out of the salt layers. At the beginning of 1935 the first salt came out of the ground and in 1936 a salt factory was built near the Twente Canal. Of the eighty towers that were built in the following years, seven have survived. Three of them (including this one (number 27) have been granted monumental status. The towers were in use until 1963, they were replaced by low pump buildings."
