The text of the marker reads:
Patrolman Bill Thompson of the Salem Police Department was slain in the line of duty while assisting fellow officers. He was fatally shot during the apprehension of a barricaded suspect. Thompson Memorial Drive is named in honor of Patrolman Thompson's service and ultimate sacrifice.
