The Peace Monument made by the Chinese artist Yao Yuan was unveiled on June 3rd, 2004 which was the 60th anniversary of the Normandy landing.
In Grandcamp-Maisy was a battle on the morning of June 6, 1944, in which the US Army Rangers defeated the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc. Here the Germans had a large artillery line-up. Nearly half of the 250 Rangers were killed during this operation.
The statue of the woman with the dove of peace is 10 meters high, weighs 8 tons and is made of oxidized steel.
"Yao Yuan is one of China's most famous artists. After being sentenced to factory work during the Cultural Revolution, he has decided to dedicate his life to the cause of world peace. He began this work by giving various peace statues to the peoples of Korea (1995) and Russia (Moscow, 2000). He created the original Statue of World Peace, a woman whose outstretched hands release a dove, in 2001, dominating a central square in Beijing." Source: (
