According to the American Guide Series book on Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, A Guide to the Keystone State, 1940, p. 472:

"PYMATUNING PARK (boating, fishing), 119.4 m., is (R) at the PYMATUNING RESERVOIR, the southern shore of which is paralleled by US 322. The crescent-shaped reservoir, 16 miles long, and two-and-a-half miles wide, with a shore line of approximately 70 miles, inundates almost all of what was known as the Pymatuning swamp, a 9,000-acre tract of marshy wasteland believed to have been the vestige of a pre-glacial lake that drained northward to Lake Erie. Withdrawal of the ice-sheet left moraines that dammed the outlet. The resulting lakes, ponds, and streams formed the headwaters of the Shenango River, and became a favorite Indian hunting ground. The tendency of the river to overflow its banks caused local residents to pool funds and purchase condemned Ohio farms in order to obtain a State appropriation for construction of the reservoir.

"A walk leads to the 2,700-foot PYMATUNING DAM, with its 40-foot spill-way. Pymatuning is really two lakes: Linesville Lake and Pymatuning Lake, separated by a causeway carrying the Pennsylvania Railroad and a highway. The lake to the north is set aside as a wild-life sanctuary; the other, stocked with fish, is a recreation spot."

Pymatuning State Park is located in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, along the border with Ohio. The northern end of the park is in Linesville, and the southern end, where the main park office is located, is in Jamestown. The park includes and surrounds Pymatuning Reservoir, a 17,088-acre lake that was created in the 1930s by damming the Pymatuning Swamp. The park is open daily and is free to visit. There are many recreational activities in which one can participate at the park, including boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and camping. The Linesville Spillway, near the north end of the park, is a popular spot for feeding fish.
