Blue plaque at the site of the original Alma Bridge, Sidmouth. Damaged during severe flooding in 2012, a replacement has been built about 40 metres upstream along the River Sid. The plaque reads - Site of original ALMA BRIDGE
As the number of houses east of the River Sid increased, convenient crossings were needed. In 1855, Mrs Cornish, wife of the Lord the Manor of Salcombe Regis, allowed the Sid Vale Association to construct Alma Bridge, named after the Battle of Alma, 1854. Timbers came from a vessel wrecked on Sidmouth beach. In 1900, Sidmouth Council commissioned architect RW Sampson to design a replacement bridge and by 1902 the zig-zag path on the opposite bank was completed. Cliff falls so endangered that bridge that a new one was approved upstream. Ham Field, to the west, previously known as ‘The Marsh’, was presented to the town for public recreation in 1896.Further reading - ( visit link)
