The former Shrewsbury District #1 Schoolhouse, a.k.a. the Brick School, was built in 1830. The upper floor once served as the Grand Army of the Republic Meeting Hall. The building was acquired by and is now the headquarters of the Shrewsbury Historical Society.

"Originally intended to be only one floor, the school house was increased another story when citizens prevailed upon the building committee to add a hall upstairs. The lower floor was used for classrooms and the upstairs vaulted hall for local gatherings.
The building was used as a school until 1883, and now houses the Historical Society upstairs and town offices on the main floor. The building is brick painted white and its gable end is divided into three bays by recessed arches." (visit link)

The Shrewsbury Historical Society was organized on January 7, 1898 and incorporated on June 23, 1902. According to their website their mission statement is:

"The purpose and goal of the Shrewsbury Historical Society shall be to keep alive and increase interest in the history of the Town of Shrewsbury; to collect and preserve items of special value, traditions, and curiosities; to encourage general public interest in the Society's work and to maintain such personal properties and real estate that may come under the control of the Society." To this end they have historical artifacts that document the growth of the town of Shrewsbury from the early 1700s to the present day. Materials include manuscripts, ledgers, books, maps, photographs, films, and electronic records.
