This Civil War memorial is located on the campus of Allegheny College, to the south of Bentley Hall, in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The memorial is a plaque embedded in a large rock, near a sidewalk and between two large trees. Above the plaque is engraved the year 1910. The plaque reads:
"In memory of the men of Allegheny College who served their country as soldiers and sailors of the Civil War this stone is placed by those who coming after have felt the inspiration of their devotion."
According to the Allegheny College website, dozens of students from Allegheny fought in the Civil War, both for the Union and the Confederacy. Among these was William McKinley, who later became president of the United States.
