Onze strijd voor jullie vrijheid eindigde hier.
Op 28 juni 1943 om 23.45 uur steeg vanaf het vliegveld Mildenhall in
Engeland de Short Stirling bommenwerper EH-888 op voor een missie
naar Keulen. Op de terugweg werd het vliegtuig door kogels van een
Duitse nachtjager geraakt. De Stirling stortte om 02.40 uur neer in
de Hollandse IJssel en deels op de Mastwijkse kade bij Montfoort. Zes
Britse bemanningsleden kwamen bij de crash om het leven. Ze liggen
naast elkaar begraven op Begraafplaats Rusthof in Leusden.
Navigator Harold Mallen (24 jaar) overleefde als enige de crash.
De 24 jarige Harold Mallen sprong net op tijd met zijn parachute uit het brandende vliegtuig en vlucht in zuidelijke richting de polder in.
Maar werd twee dagen later door de Duitsers gepakt en verbleef tot
het einde van de oorlog in verschillende krijgsgevangenenkampen.

On 28 June 1943 at 23.45 hours, the Short Stirling bomber EH-888 took off from Mildenhall airfield in
England, the Short Stirling bomber EH-888 took off for a mission
to Cologne. On the way back the plane was hit by bullets from a German night fighter.
German night fighter. The Stirling crashed at 02.40 hours into the
Hollandse IJssel and partly on the Mastwijkse quay near Montfoort. Six
British crew members died in the crash. They lie
buried next to each other in Rusthof cemetery in Leusden.
Navigator Harold Mallen (24 years old) was the only survivor of the crash.
The 24 year old Harold Mallen jumped just in time with his parachute from the burning plane and fled south into the polder.
But two days later he was caught by the Germans and stayed in various war camps until the end of the war.
