[FR] Avec un niveau des mers inférieurs de 6 à 7 m, le golfe du Morbihan se présentait comme une large vallée irriguée par les deux cours d'eau, l'île était encore rattachée à la terre.
La tombe mégalithique de Penhap est enchâssée dans l'extrémité sud d'un long tertre de 80 m sur 40 m. Ce qui reste de ce vaste ensemble, entamé par les emprunts de matériaux au cours des siècles, suffit à nous permettre d'imaginer la présence d'une élevée de terre dont la hauteur pouvait atteindre de 6,00 à 8,00 m.
La chambre funéraire présente un plan trapézoïdal, elle est desservie par une entrée orientée au sud-est. Le granite ici utilisé s'apparente à la roche sous-jacente.
Le dolmen de Pen Hap aurait, selon l'étude de son type d'architecture, entre 5 500 et 6 000 ans.
Les fouilles menées par le Dr Mauricet en 1877 ont révélé un matériel archéologique conservé au musée d'histoire et d'archéologie de Vannes.
[EN] The chamber is formed by nine adjoining orthostat slabs and a massive capstone with a very particular shape, making the monument easily distinguishable from others. The passage comprises five orthostat slabs (one of which is now lying on the ground), and a capstone. On the partition stone between the chamber and the passage, two engravings have been identified as depicting sperm whales.
The area around the monument was landscaped by the Département of Morbihan (which owns the monument) in the early 2000s. The adjacent high embankment is in fact a large, elongated mound comprising several small tumuli. Located in the middle of a field, the site is indicated by signposts from the road leading to the southern tip of the island. It is a must-see for hikers and cyclists, and offers splendid views over the Gulf of Morbihan.
