The plaque reads -
10 HIGH STREET
Formerly Chick’s Lace Shop
From 1849 to 1892, this early Victorian house was home to
Harriet (1812-92) and Samuel Chick II (1811-80) whose family
lived in Branscombe. Samuel’s mother’s business acumen had
transformed the cottage lace industry of Beer and Branscombe.
Likewise, Samuel ensured that lace made in the Sid valley
became available to the nationwide market. Materials were
supplied to lace-makers and completed ‘sprigs’ were made up
in the upstairs workroom. Much lace was sold by their son
Samuel Chick III, to the London Market as ‘Honiton’ lace -
Honiton was an important centre for selling East Devon lace
for distribution nationally. Harriet died after 47 years in
the lace trade.
